If you compiled a comprehensive history of beauty, there’d be one natural product that just keeps coming up: honey. Since ancient times it’s been used for its healing properties and it still prevails in products and even modern medicine.
“For centuries honey has been one of nature’s best-kept beauty secrets,” CEW Award winning company Bee Good’s beekeeper, Simon Cavill, assured Cover Media. “Honey has so many benefits for the skin – in its purest form it’s suitable for all skin types and assists with perfecting, cleansing, and protecting the skin.”
We reveal exactly why honey has the beauty world buzzing.
It’s a skin saviour
If you suffer from any kind of complexion issue, you could benefit from incorporating honey into your skincare routine.
“Honey’s naturally antibacterial quality is great for acne treatment and prevention,” Cherry Woods, luxury facialist at the Cherry Woods Skin Clinic in Richmond, explained to us.
She adds that it’s also a natural anti-ageing remedy thanks to the antioxidants, which protect against free radical damage. Oh, and if you suffer from problem pores, honey will help there, too.
“Honey opens up your pores, making them easier to unclog and clarifying your skin,” she added.
It’s a saviour for dry skin too, with beekeeper Simon revealing it attracts water to the skin, helping it stay supple and elastic. For example, Calendulis Plus Cream uses Manuka honey to moisturise and help fight eczema and psoriasis.
Or for a relaxing treat you could use Bomb Cosmetics’ Summer Honey Massage Heart, which blends honey and coconut to melt at skin temperature. Light a Bomb Cosmetics Vanilla Honey Candle for added bliss!
If you want to make your own honey-based product, try Cherry’s sweet exfoliator.
“Mix two tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of baking soda,” she said. “Splash your skin with water and then gently rub the concoction on your face and body in a circular motion. Remove the word ‘scrub’ from your vocabulary – be gentle with your skin! Rinse well and your skin will look brighter and feel refreshed.”
It helps heal hair
And the benefits of honey don’t stop at skin – it’s also a sweet treat for your tresses.
“Honey’s moisturising and softening properties make it a wonderful hair conditioner; it also gives shine to dull hair,” Susan Kohutova, Medical Herbalist and Founder and Formulator of Zuzka Natural Beauty, said.
She recommends mixing one tablespoon of raw honey with two tablespoons of olive oil, spreading through hair and washing off after 20 minutes.
Or if you’re not in the mood for DIY, opt for the Bomb Cosmetics Honey Hair Mask – sweet!
