Michael Essien has declined a deal to join Melbourne Victory Football Club in Australia despite being offered one million dollars for the season.

The former Chelsea, AC Milan and Real Madrid player cited personal reasons for turning down the deal at the last hour.

The Australian had hoped to sign the midfield dynamo with a new rule in place which allows clubs to sign one star player.

Essien was last signed to Greek giants, Panathinaikos but was released after bouts of injury and his huge wage bill proved too much for the islanders to keep.
