When news broke that a notorious Nigerian billionaire kidnapper had been apprehended, Ghanaians didn’t expect to be a slice in Mr. Chukwudidumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans’ pie but the reality is disconcerting.
Evans was arrested on June 10 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport after years of evading capture while exiting Nigeria. A search on him revealed a Ghanaian passport but further checks revealed that Evans also procured Ghanaian passports for his wife and two children.
Evans bears the name Asare Nelson while wife real name Uchenna Precious Onwuamadike goes by the alias Precious Asare on her Ghanaian passport while their wards also bear the Asare name on passports issued in Accra.
Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, stressed the need for collaborative effort of the police across borders in West Africa as that partnership resulted in the capture of the notorious kidnapper.
Idris delivering a paper in Accra titled: “The role of Nigeria Police in National Security and its contributions in West Africa” at the West Africa International Security Conference submitted: “For several years, Evans terrorised Nigerians and nationals of many countries across West Africa. Efforts to apprehend him did not yield the desired results until we spread our search net wider.”
He added information sharing and intelligence cooperation among police services in West Africa was crucial adding “through such exchange that we were able to nab a Ghanaian/Nigerian kidnapper two weeks ago, after evading arrest for many years.”
It also emerged Evans had secured residence at the Spintex Road in Accra for his wife and five children in Ghana.
Interestingly enough, Evans’ wife Precious claims she is ignorant of her husband’s kidnapping business noting he informed her he deals in spare parts and also into the shipping business only sending the children to Ghana to enjoy quality education.
Precious adds: “I have not been receiving money from him, I have never seen his money. The only thing I know is that there was a time he bought an expensive watch in Dubai and I wanted to know why he bought it when he could not open any business for me. I have never seen him as a rich man. While with him, we made sure we had all we wanted to eat and that’s all. I can’t remember seeing any sign of affluence in him. In fact, I have never suspected him as a criminal. If I have been seeing any strange things, I would have suspected him. We have three cars, one Hilux, one grand Cherokee and an SUV. I know he banks with GTB only. Their staff used to visit us in the house.”
According to the Nigerian IGP, investigations done so far shows Evans only attacked Nigerians adding six of his victims were made to pay $1 million before they were set free stressing Evans in 2015 amassed $6.2 million from his kidnapping business.
Meanwhile Evans may be expired by the state as Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has signed into law life imprisonment or death penalty for the offence of kidnap and forceful extortion in Lagos State. He penned into law the State Kidnapping Prohibition Bill, 2016.
