There were casualties and one fatality when the bus of Asante Kotoko rammed into a moving truck at Nkawkaw near Abepotia on Wednesday night.
The accident claimed the life of Deputy Kit and Equipment Officer, Kofi Asare while players and head coach, Steve Pollack sustained varied injuries.
The Kotoko players were returning home to Kumasi after honouring the week 22 fixture of the Ghana Premier League when they played Inter Allies, a match they lost.
Despite the bus being torn into shreds, the players and technical staff were ferried by ordinary citizens who chanced upon the accident and while they were treated by medics, upon realizing their injuries were minor discharged them to their homes except coach Pollack who was in intensive care.
Mr. Berchie, the Kotoko bus driver is said to also be in a critical condition and receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. However the Nkawkaw Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Jeff Darko, reckons if the driver had been careful, he could have averted the accident noting: “If the driver had driven with caution and at a reduced speed this would not have happened.”
