The People’s National Convention (PNC), 2016 presidential candidate, Dr. Edward Nasigiri Mahama, just as has happened since the days of yore failed miserably yet again in his bid to become president in the last election but the medical doctor has been given a reprieve by President Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo has named Dr. Edward Mahama an Ambassador-At-Large.
He is among twenty two other envoys named on Monday to represent the country on other lands including Ayikoi Otoo, George Ayisi Boateng, Mercy Bampoe Addo, Salma Francess Mancell-Egala; Turkey, Paul Oko; Egypt, Kwasi Owusu Yeboa; Togo, Miss Sophia Horner-Sam; Netherlands, Mrs Amerleey Olennu; Denmark, Mrs. Elizabeth Salamtu; Namibia, Gen. Francis Adu-Amanfoh; Mali.
But what does it mean to be an Ambassador-at-Large?
It simply means a diplomat of the highest rank, who is accredited to represent his country internationally.
Unlike an ambassador-in-residence who is usually limited to a country or embassy, the AMBASSADOR-AT-LARGE is entrusted to operate in several, usually neighboring countries, a region or sometimes hold a seat in an international organization like the United Nations and the European Union. In some cases an Ambassador-At-Large may even be specifically assigned a role to advise and assist the State or a government in particular issues.
