On Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the State House Banquet Hall, Accra in Ghana, the 2017 CAF Awards was staged. CAF First Vice President Kwesi Nyantakyi, a Ghanaian had the task to organise a stellar event as one in charge of the award’s Local Organising Committee.

Given that music had always paired with sports beautifully, artistes including Shatta Wale, WizKid, Efya Fally Ipupa, Toofan, Kidi were contracted to perform.

When it ended; Ghanaian’s Efya rendered the country’s national anthem, the DRC’s Fally Ipupa performed as did Togolese singer Toofan. Although away from home, Nigerian performers WizKid, Flavour Patoranking, Phyno, Tiwa Savage and Olamide all had ample time to perform. For Ghana’s rising star Kidi, the reports suggest he performed after the event was closed and to the chairs.

Shatta Wale never mounted the stage. There is talk WizKid whom he had clashed with online had made sure he couldn’t perform although there were claims Shatta refused to show up for rehearsals hence the no show.

After the event, it emerged Shatta Wale had hold of $30,000 which he was keen on keeping despite not performing at the CAF event. In a radio interview Shatta Wale submitted:

“I don’t have a contract with CAF. Nobody had contacted me. Two days to the event, then someone contacted me that CAF is offering $30,000. I have worked with CAF before and I know they don’t do things like that. Some of us should be very careful in this country. We are killing ourselves. I need to be paid well. This is my home. I have taken the money and nobody can take it from me because I didn’t sign any contract with anybody. I don’t know why somebody can just go and collect $30,000, come and give it to me and tell me to go and perform while I’ve not seen my contract,” he said.

He continued: “When they (CAF) wanted me in Nigeria last year, they wrote emails two months to the event before we were able to seal a deal. We had a schedule. Here in Ghana, two days to the event, someone will call me and say he has $30,000, rush and come meet my manager. As a smart man, I’ll save the $30,000 first and that’s what I did. I then asked them to go and bring the contract to show who agreed that I take such an amount for a show of that nature. So disrespectful!”

Often, Shatta Wale can be self-serving and it didn’t help that WizKid was reportedly paid $150,000.

Meanwhile the booking agency for Ghanaian artistes at the CAF Awards; BookMe World Agency has blamed the Nigerian organizers for the way the Ghanaian artistes were treated at the ceremony.

According to Gregory Ankrah his company did no wrong and that things did not go as planned because the Nigerian organizers did not stay on schedule.

Meanwhile, the headline sponsor of the Awards, Aiteo Group has apologized to dancehall artiste Shatta Wale for his inability to perform at the event.

Emcees for the night were football legend Didier Drogba and SuperSport’s South African presenter Carol Tshabalala as well as Boris Kodjoe and his wife Nicole Ari Parker whose poor display was disappointing.
