Brain behind Darko Farms & Co. Ltd, Dr. Kwabena Darko has turned 78 today. Born on October 23, 1942 at Bekwai in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Darko took to petty trading early on when he lost his dad.
He would have his stint with the poultry business thanks to his stepfather. Being the owner of a small chicken farm, young Darko quickly learnt the rudiments of running a poultry farm. He was enrolled in Ruppin Institute, specialising in poultry science in the late 1950s and early sixties.
Returning to Ghana after his studies in Israel, Kwabena Darko had a 6-month stint with the Ghana State Farms Corporation but joined forces with his stepfather who had scaled his operation to commercial poultry farming with 100,000 birds.
By April 1967, Kwabena dared to run his own poultry farm operation under the trading name Darko Farms and Company.
Darko ran for president in the 1992 Ghanaian election on the ticket of the National Independence Party placing fourth. After the election, Darko focused on his poultry business. Till 2011, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Darko Farms & Co. Ltd. The business continues to thrive thanks to Samuel Darko and Jonathan Darko who are Managing Director and Director respectively.
With over 50 years’ experience in the poultry business, Kwabena Darko’s immense knowledge has been tapped into by many bodies earning the “Akokɔ Darko” tag.
He’s been the Chairman of the National Poultry Development Committee, the President of Ghana Animal Science Association, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sinapi Aba Trust (a micro-finance trust), Vice-Chairman of the African Business Round Table and Chairman of Opportunity International Network.
