Samira, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Ramatu Bawumia

At the inauguration of President Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2021, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin in acknowledging Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s wife mentioned Ramatu Bawumia instead of the well-known Samira.

The development divided opinions if indeed there was a Ramatu Bawumia or the mention was a slip from the speaker.

The Rt. Hon. Bagbin then made a clarification noting he mentioned the name he was provided on the guests list and meant no harm. Tongues had already set about wagging that since Bawumia of the Ahamadiya Muslim sect is allowed to pick two wives; he indeed has a Ramatu as the first wife and then Samira as second who is viewed as the second lady of the 4th Republic of Ghana.

Samira Bawumia nee Ramadan is daughter of Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, former National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Ambassador to the UAE as well a sister of Abu Ramadan.

She is a Kwame Nkrumah University (KNUST) as well as Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) product where she had her Master’s Degree.
